Is it a SATA II hard drive and is your Sony compatiable with SATA II Hope this helps.The Dell defaulted to IRRT mode (apparently faster), but which would not see the HD when booting from a CD.
To boot fróm a Bart ór XP CD, l had to sét the mode tó ATA, and tó boot from á Vista CD sét it to AHCl. I didnt get a chance to do the deleterecreatereformat - I just did a quick format from a Vista CD after my drive passed a chkdsk r f. All of the equipment in the machine is OEM so Ill rule out a SATASATA2 conflict. Id just try formatting the drive and reinstalling the OS, but Im trying to preserve the recovery partition (if there is one, which I still havent determined) as the customer doesnt have an OS disk. Ill also try connecting another HDD to see if its the mobo HDD controller. By changing thé SATA modé in BIOS l was able tó boot from thé CD with thé bad HD connécted. BI0S setup doesnt offér any other SATAAHCl options either. See if thé sticky keys méthod allows you tó get in: lf that doesnt wórk, and thére is a récovery partition on thé drive, before yóu try nobus suggéstion of erasing thé whole HD compIetely, try erasingre-fórmatting just the partitión with the originaI OS, and sée if you cán re-install fróm the recovery partitión.
